My Changing Relationship with New Media
Personal Statement

Throughout the semester my relationship with new media/technology has essentially grown. The course helped to provide the knowledge in different programs that could be used to create digital media as well as providing a new perspective on both enjoying and analyzing different forms of media/art. In today’s society it has become an extreme disadvantage if you do not know how to use technology, as society has been consistently growing in its dependency of technology.

The first project that we did involved using Adobe Photoshop and composing a digital collage. Prior to this course, I’ve already used a similar program to Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paintshop Pro. The background information on jasc paintshop pro helped to make the transition into Adobe Photoshop easier. However, both programs were in their own ways very different. The project allowed us to be as creative as we wanted as long as our piece had a theme. The project that I chose to do was a realistic fake, by choosing to do the realistic fake; it showed me how the media can essentially alter both images and videos. We as a society are subjects to the manipulation of the media, and this can be shown with the way media can use technology like Adobe Photoshop to alter false images and videos.

Our second project was a slideshow using iPhoto. Similarly to the digital collage, we had a lot of freedom to choose what we wanted to do. One of the more appealing suggestions was to sync the photos with the music we chose to include in our slideshow. This was a great project to show new technology because it showed the transition of how people previously use to show pictures (with the projection screen and the clicker) to having them burnt and playing altogether on the computer under one file. It was a pretty difficult project because I lacked the background knowledge in using iPhoto and the synchronizing of the music with the pictures was difficult. However, it showed a great technological advancement we’ve made as a society, the way slideshows were previously shown.

Our third project was a digital film. The digital film was the most difficult project of all the projects we’ve done in the course. I think it shows how difficult it is to edit and film movies and the troubles that filmmakers have when conducting and producing their films. For instance a problem that many people had was finding actors, the same problem arrived for me. I had an entire concept created but people were canceling last minute and ultimately I was forced to change my entire film into a documentary. The editing process was also extremely difficult because anything that was out of place or didn’t make sense could possibly throw off the entire film. During the editing process I learned how to cut clips down, add music/extract audio and much more. Essentially, though, this project gave me a new respect for those individuals who make films for a living.

Our fourth and final project was creating a website. This was probably the easiest project for me. I took a course like this previously in junior high school and since then my love for coding and designing websites has only continued. I’ve never used Dreamweaver and realized how much easier it was to code things on Dreamweaver than with the programs that I was currently using, but at the same time, there were aspects to Dreamweaver that were difficult as well. A lot of the things that you could do with Dreamweaver, you can do with Microsoft Frontpage, however they involved different steps to getting the same results. With DreamWeaver I was able to learn how the program added tables, linked images, how it used an editable region, and much more. Ultimately, having knowledge in Dreamweaver has helped significantly and made my html knowledge base better.

Throughout the course, my relationship with new media has grown. I came into the course having known some elements of the technology that we were going to be using to produce our media projects (photoshop and dreamweaver (html)) and left the course with more information than I expected to learn, which includes iPhoto, iMovie, and learning how to use a Mac! All these tools are beneficial because like I stated previously society is really dependent now on technology and media and having these tools only helps.

Welcome
Welcome to my digital portfolio for my Thr216 course. This website was designed to showcase the different works that I have done throughout the semester. These artistic works include a digital collage, a slideshow, as well as a digital film. Each project/work was put together on a completely different program. Feel free to look around and enjoy the works!
