Question
Answer
Where is the Freewheel Collective located?

Freewheel now meets on the campus of Stony Brook University, in room 024 (Club Alley), located in the basement of the Student Union on John S. Toll Drive. The best way to find this is to use this map.

By train: Take the LIRR to the Stony Brook Station. Using the map provided above, walk or ride 0.5 miles to the Student Union.

By roadway: LIE to exit 62N, Nicholls Road (Route 97). Follow Nicholls Road north, across 347. Go through the intersections with Oxhead and South Drive. Make a LEFT into the campus via Entrance Drive. Use the map above to find the Student Union.

You can also find the entrance to Stony Brook University via Mapquest.

What is the "Freewheel Collective"?
The Freewheel Collective is a group of dedicated bicycle activists. Our primary activities are sharing mechanical skills, repairing/recycling bicycles, and organizing community rides. We also plan to run special programs for kids, teens, and adults that will foster both bike riding and bicycle mechanic skills. On an island dominated by the car, we also seek greater consideration for and protection of our fellow cyclists.
Why was the Freewheel Collective formed? Are you out to make money? To rule the world?
No, the Freewheel Collective is neither bent on profits nor on world domination. Quite simply, we realize something that many do not: the bicycle is a beautiful machine. Riding a bicycle conserves natural resources, increases both physical and mental health, reduces pollution, and contributes to a more sane community. By working in a non-profit framework, we seek to help all people to learn to enjoy the bicycle. We recognize that many people don't ride because they fear mechanical problems and/or cannot afford a new bicycle. Our solution? Teach people to fix their bikes, and offer free or low-cost bikes to those who need them.
How can I get involved in the Freewheel Collective?

There are really three ways that you can get involved:

1. Come to one of our meetings! This is the best way to meet the other members of the organization and learn about the direction of the organization. Click here to find out when we meet next.

2. Show up during our open hours. If you already have mechanical skills (even something as simple as fixing flats), this is the way to start helping immediately. Click here to find out when we meet next.

3. Show up during one of our skill sharing sessions. If you want to get involved but fear that your bike-fixing skills are not well-developed, this is the place to learn. Click here to find out when we meet next.

What the difference between "open hours" and "skill sharing sessions"?

Open hours are primarily focused on turning out repaired bicycles (although some learning does go on).

Skill sharing sessions are primarily focused on sharing mechanical skills (although some repair work does go on).

How can I get regular updates regarding the Freewheel Collective?
Anyone can sign up for our email discussion list here. This list is used exclusively for discussing Freewheel business (you will get kicked off if you start SPAMing it!), so it does not generate an obscene number of emails.
I can't be actively involved, but I'd like to help... what could I contribute?
We need all kinds of help! If you have old bikes, we'd love to take them off of your hands (we promise to give them good homes!). We also have a wishlist of other items you might want to donate. Finally, we need money to buy tools and supplies for our emerging community bike shop – if you have money to spare, consider a donation! To make a contribution, email to fwcoord@gmail.com.
Do you actually re-build bikes from the frame up?
Yes, in fact we do... check out that process here.
